Presenting Our Fun Summer Program for 2011
Harald Fröhlich
It is time to think about summer plans and our summer team has been busy percolating and planning camps for all ages. We proudly present an array of diverse and delightful camps.
We’ve made changes based on family feedback from last summer’s program survey. We are now offering morning carpool drop-off from 8:45 to 9 AM for our main summer program from June 20th to July 29th, and we will continue to offer afternoon carpool pick up 3 to 3:15 PM.
Most of our camps are now offered as one-week sessions to make your summer planning easier! However, River Camp continues as a two week camp and the pre-K camp “Fins, Feathers, Fur & Fun” is still offered in two-week sessions.
Many parents specifically asked for a music theater camp and we are thrilled to offer a one-week camp with our own Peter Granquist. Broadway Bound musical theater camp sets the stage in a playful, safe environment for kids to hone public speaking skills, teamwork, memorization, creative expression and self-control. Students will get the chance to shine in this fun one-week camp, and Peter is looking forward to applying the skills he learned from Orff training and tutelage under Sofia, Doug and James.
Famous children’s book author Vivian Walsh (not to be mistaken with our own Vivian Walz) will be teaching a one-week Book & Art Illustration camp. We are looking forward to having her on our campus for the first time! You may be familiar with Vivian’s books such as “Olive, The Other Reindeer,” or “Penguin Dreams.”
We are delighted to host for the sixth time, the beloved and enchanting River Camp with Gregory Gavin. Gregory is known throughout San Francisco for creating irresistible environments and art projects that compel children and adults alike to rediscover art, craft and play. He's been commissioned by the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the M. H. de Young Museum, and has designed/taught summer camps for the Bay Area Discovery Museum and the Museum of Children’s Art. Gregory is also a former parent at our school. We are thrilled that our very own Dolores Elkins, North Class head teacher, will accompany Gregory for both sessions.
¿Quieres estudiar español? Want to learn some Spanish? Then join Annalise Porras who is back for the fourth time with her successful elementary Spanish summer camp Sabor Latino. Eclectic activities range from soccer to bingo to museum tours, and, this summer, campers will visit the Pablo Picasso art exhibit at the SFMOMA! Students will observe and discuss his paintings and drawings, and muse about the life of this Spanish artist, all while expanding their Spanish vocabulary.
Vivian Walz, teacher and parent at our school, is back again with two new camps. This year Vivian is offering a Stitch & Knit textiles camp for Elementary ages. Campers can expect to have creative adventures with fabric, thread, yarn, buttons, and beads. Campers will learn new techniques to devise wearable art, accessories, household items, and playthings. Vivian will also lead our August mixed age camp this year, which will be called Scrap Art. This camp is all about the experience and fun of turning “trash” into treasure and ties into our ongoing school effort to be a model of sustainability. Vivian warmly draws students into projects with related readings, samples of her own work and that of a variety of SCRAP artists. She offers elaborate outings and her bounding enthusiasm for this art form is contagious!
Michelle Yi-Martin, our 8th grade Humanities teacher and parent at our school, will be back with her Middle School writers' camp: Fearless Writing. Students will perch on the precipice of the page ready to leap deeply into the world of poetry and fiction. With an emphasis on craft, the class will engage in intimate workshops prompted by outings to various city landscapes and restaurants, music, and occasional eavesdropping while on the Muni!
Middle Schoolers can also dabble in sustainable design with art teacher Ruth Cardillo in Grafting a Green World: Re-making Clothing. In this studio style camp, students will venture into the growing realm of green crafters by remaking old clothes into “new” items and haunting thrift shops and SCRAP in search of buttons, trim and other compelling items! Each one-week session will end with a fashion show featuring accessorizing with style and social conscience.
Our main 6-week pre-K camp Fins, Feathers, Fur & Fun is play-based and will have as it's main focus exposure to Spanish and German language. Students learn by repeating language routines in a structured environment with plenty of outdoor time, movement and play. Our own Spanish teacher Jennifer Baron, and North Class teacher, Nova Ray, will join me and together with our students we will explore the world of animals. Our camp will be visited by Jane Wattenberg and her chickens as well as the Insect Discovery Lab to make our exploration even more fun.
Shannon Schneble will be back for only one week this June with her popular Shannon’s Such a Summer camp, a unique mixed age camp focused on elaborate art projects, outings and altogether great fun.
So what are you waiting for? Registration starts today February 1st at: sfschool.org/summer.
