ALL SCHOOL

8th Grade Shakespeare Play
This year's 8th Grade Shakespeare play, "As You Like It", will be performed next Wednesday, March 23rd at 7:30 PM at the Brava Theater (24th Street @ York). Adapted and directed by Amelia Stewart and Wendy Parkman, this hour long version has something for everyone: romantic comedy, clowns, bad guys, original music and choreography, great costumes, and the timeless language of The Bard, himself. Did we mention cross-dressing and live wrestling? Appropriate for children of all ages, but recommended highly for kids from 4th grade and up. Admission is free.

San Francisco Bike to School Day
If the number of kids who walk and bike to school was restored to 1969 levels, our nation would cut 3.2 billion vehicle miles, 1.5 million tons of CO2, and 89,000 tons of other pollutants annually. This is the equivalent of keeping more than 250,000 cars off the road for a year. Pedroso, M., 2008, Safe Routes to School: Steps to a Greener Future

San Francisco Bike to School Day is an event to encourage San Francisco students and their families to safely try out riding to school on one day each Spring. It is an "Encouragement" event of the San Francisco Safe Routes to School Program. It will be held Thursday, April 7. If your family would like to participate in this effort, please read on…

  • Check this SF Bicycle Guide for information on safe equipment, safe riding, bicycle laws, and additional helpful tips: http://www.sfbike.org/download/resources/SF_BicycleGuide_2006_000.pdf
  • Consider a safe route. Link to http://www.sfbike.org/mapper/ and enter your trip details. Or, look at our established Walk in Thursday routes. Check here for Glen Park route and here for Noe Valley route and times.
  • If you’re concerned about parking your bicycle for the day, we have 3 parking areas at school: 1 in the parking lot (bring a bike lock), 1 by the Elementary/Middle School Play structure, and an overflow bike parking area in the alley between 3rd Grade and the Spanish Room.
  • If you have a bicycle in need of repair, or need an affordable bicycle, The Bike Kitchen is a terrific resource with a public purpose! http://www.bikekitchen.org/

Spring Break = Spring Cleaning?
Tired at looking at that puffy parka you bought on sale and never wore? Dreaming of a tidy garage and need a place to offload yesterday’s Dell? This spring break, donate your gently used stuff to Community Thrift at 623 Valencia Street (corner of Sycamore Alley) and tell the nice hipsters there that you want to benefit the 8th graders at The San Francisco School. (See what they accept: www.communitythriftsf.org/donate) Too far to drive? Stay tuned for the next Cast-offs to Carpool date and we’ll save you the trip. Thank you and happy spring!

Lost and Found
Lost and Found will be cleared out this Thursday. Elementary and Middle School Lost and Found rack has been in the Activity Room during these rainy days but we'll try to put it by the Front Gate at sunny times!

Calendar Correction for 2011-12
Winter break is extended by 1 day next school year: Dec 19, 2011 through Jan 2, 2012. Because New Year’s Day lands on a Sunday, the observed holiday is Monday, Jan 2, 2012. School will resume on Tuesday, Jan 3, 2012.

OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL

Congrats to SFS Student - Gymnastics Champion!
Congratulations to Justin (2nd) for winning 1st Place (among 7 year olds) as the All Around Champion in the Northern California Boys Gymnastics State Championship meet on March 13th. In 6 events he scored 91.75/96 is a perfect score on all events. Gymnastics provides focus, strength and belief in oneself....all of which carry on to focus and strength in the classroom. If you'd like to know more about boys gymnastics programs, feel free to ask Justin or his parents; Justin's gym, American Gymnastics Club, is opening a large new gym on Bayshore in April....the coaches are also really great!

Race to Nowhere
See a screening of Race to Nowhere on March 23, 7 – 9 PM, including a brief post-film discussion, showing at Aptos Middle School (105 Aptos Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94127). $10 advance purchase online, $15 at the door. Proceeds benefit Aptos Middle School. Purchase tickets online at http://www.racetonowhere.com/epostcard/4495. Race To Nowhere features heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids. Featured in the film are interviews of students, psychologists, educators and medical professionals. Race to Nowhere is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens. To find out more, check out: www.racetonowhere.com, or check out the attached flyer.
