Preschool & Kindergarten

Daily Activities

The Preschool/Kindergarten schedule is built around long blocks of time that enable children to engage with their learning and with one another more deeply.

Early Morning Extended Care 7:30-8:45am
Children can play with toys, read books or participate in teacher-led activities. Every day before entering class, the group of students in our morning Extended Care students do some yoga.

Morning Work Time 8:45-10:30am
Students begin their day in the classroom with self-selected activities that may include books, practical life activities, sensorial materials, sound or number games, blocks, dramatic play or painting, drawing and science materials. Teachers move throughout the room to guide student choices and to work with children individually or in small groups. Each class also has dedicated group time that includes songs, calendar activities, thinking routines and stories. Around 9:45 the classroom doors are open and children may chose to play inside or outside.

Snack Time 10:30-11:00am
The children take a break to eat, drink and talk with friends at their table. Before they return to play outside, all students set their tables for lunch - one of many activities that support the development of concentration, coordination, memory and grace.

Outside Play 11:00-12:00pm
Children may engage in any number of activities such as: building sand castles, constructing with crates, playing pretend games, climbing, playing ball games, hula hooping or swinging. Teachers may offer an art project and during this time different age groups attend specialist teachers in Music, Art, Spanish or PE.

Lunch 12:00-12:30pm
The school provides a healthy, homemade, kid-friendly lunch for all Preschool & Kindergarten students. Children help pass out lunch with their teachers and once each child is served, the students eat together, family-style. After lunch, children bus their dishes and clean up.

Naptime (for the youngest group) 12:50-2:00pm
All children in the youngest group take naps or rest at this time. One teacher from each class is there to supervise and help students relax.

Afternoon Period 1:00-2:45pm
While the youngest students nap, the older students gather for a circle time that focuses on curricular themes. They then work on more concentrated and challenging individual and/or small group activities. During the second half of the year, the Kindergarteners have their own circle times to prepare for First Grade. At 2:00 the nappers rejoin the class. In order to get ready for carpool or Extended Day, the children take care of cleaning up the classroom. The teachers present the sound-of- the-week activity and share last thoughts about the day to help students transition out of their day at school.

End of the School Day 2:50-3:00pm
Children who will be picked up at carpool wait on the South Class deck with the Head Teachers. Children continuing on with Extended Day have a snack and story with the teachers in their classrooms. Preschool/Kindergarten Extended Day runs until 6:00pm.
