Alumni Panel From All School Meeting

One of the highlights from the all school meeting on September 30th was the alumni panel. Take a look at the conversation and the bios for the alumni as well.

Ariel Dekovic (Class of 1994)

Ariel Dekovic has worked with City Slicker Farms, a food justice organization based in West Oakland, CA, for five years, holding positions on their Board of Directors and Fundraising Committee, and now serves on the staff as Interim Executive Director, where she is helping them to construct a $1.4M urban farm and public park. She has a background in nonprofit program development, corporate partnerships and marketing that spans for more than a decade. Ariel served most recently as the Senior Programs Manager at the Collaborative for High Performance Schools, where she helped schools and districts create healthy, green learning environments across the US, with a focus on improving the 130,000 existing schools across the US. Ariel has an MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and a BA from Vassar College. Over the years, Ariel has raised chickens and turkeys in her own backyard but is now enjoying a much-needed break from the early morning chicken wake-up calls.

Samantha Hennessey (Class of 2000)

Samantha works at Google where she is the Regional Manager for the US East Coast, Canada and Africa on the Global GooglersGive Team, which encourages Googlers to use their skills, talents and resources to make an extraordinary impact on the world through a variety of giving and volunteering programs. At Google, Samantha scaled Google Reach Global, a three month skill-based volunteering and leadership development program operating in Ghana, India and the Philippines. She also founded the GooglersGive Ambassador Program through which more than 100 Googlers across the globe partner with her team to dedicate their 20% time to managing giving and volunteer programs. Samantha is currently leading initiatives on her team to help Googlers give back to their local cities through volunteering on civic innovation projects, including a pilot with the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Civic Innovation. Previously at Google, Samantha worked on the People Analytics team, a collection of business analysts, psychologists and behavioral experts that ensure people-decisions at Google are based on data. Samantha attended the San Francisco School from pre-school through elementary school. She graduated from University High School in 2004 and from Yale magna cum laude with a BA in psychology in 2008. Samantha is a native San Franciscan now living in New York City. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring the underground art and music scenes of both cities, and global travel that takes her off the beaten path.

Jake Plut (Class of 2012)

Jake is currently a senior at Urban High School. In addition to taking advantage of the many wonderful academic offerings at Urban, Jake is very involved in extra curricular activities. He founded and leads the black student union, the students of color affinity group. He is also an active member of Urban’s physical medical conditions club, the young men’s group, and the gender sexual orientation alliance. Additionally, he plays the vibraphone in Urban’s advanced jazz band and does sound production in some of Urban’s productions all while writing and directing a one-act play. On top of all of this, he has played varsity tennis for three years and is on Urban’s Admission Committee team.  Lastly, he is joining a group of Urban students this year on a trip to India to study environmental science and cultural collisions. In his “spare time”, Jake plays music outside of school, works with the youth in his Fillmore District neighborhood, and serves as a counselor in training at an adoption Alliance called PACT.
