SFS Names New Head of Middle School
We extend a warm welcome to Nancy Nagramada
On behalf of the Hiring Committee for the Middle School Head, I am excited to announce Nancy Nagramada as our new Head of Middle School starting July 1, 2017. Nancy will succeed current Head of Middle School, Chris Mader, who served the school so well during his tenure here. We were fortunate to have an expansive pool of talented applicants from across the country for this position, which allowed for a rich hiring and deliberation process.
Nancy is a Bay Area native. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Education from Hunter College in New York. She went on to earn her Master of Arts degree in Education Administration (with a private school leadership focus) from Teachers College at Columbia University. She comes to The San Francisco School with more than 20 years of teaching, administrative and deep middle school experience. She is currently at The Athenian School in Danville, CA, where she has held many roles during her 14-year tenure. In fact, when speaking with Athenian’s Head of School, he noted that over the years, he has had to create positions specifically for Nancy because “…she is so driven, capable and highly functional.” Nancy currently serves as the Special Assistant to the Head of School for Strategic Initiatives, 9th Grade History teacher, 9th Grade advisor, Admission Ambassador program leader, and Director of Summer Programs. Her other roles at Athenian have included:
- 7th Grade Social Studies (3 years) and 8th Grade English teacher (10 years)
- Middle School Dean of Faculty (2 years)
- Co-leader to design Standards of Teaching Excellence at Athenian and the Faculty Evaluation and Development Process
- Head of the Task Force on Community Outreach and Public Purpose
- Dean of Diversity and Inclusion (3 years)
Before her time at Athenian, Nancy worked at Castilleja School where as a teacher she taught 6th Grade History and was a student advisor, and as an administrator, she served as the Assistant Middle School Head, chaired the Diversity Coordinator Committee and was the Director of Summer Camp. Nancy began her career directing a Summerbridge program in New York and later in Sacramento. During her time with Summerbridge, a program which works with under-served middle school students, Nancy recruited, hired and supervised the faculty, raised a significant amount of money, and managed the annual budget.
I am thrilled to have Nancy and her family become a part of our community. She will be joined by her spouse, Charlie Raymond, and children Sebastian (13) and Milo (5). Sebastian will enter 9th grade at Athenian in the fall and Milo will hopefully join the rising 1st grade at SFS. While Nancy is committed to finishing strong at Athenian, at the same time, she is enthusiastically ready to get started at SFS. We are just beginning to craft her transition plan and anticipate she will be able to spend some time with us before we officially break for the summer.
Thank you to those of you who participated in the “day of” candidate visits. Furthermore, thank you to the hiring committee who devoted an extensive amount of time and energy to this process. Because of the wonderful pool of candidates, the deliberation process was challenging. We followed an incredibly inclusive and thorough process, and ultimately, we very much enjoyed working with one another. Please help me in welcoming Nancy and her family to the San Francisco School.
