Math: Your child brought home a folder with 3 types of optional but recommended assignments:
1) Math Fact Practice Sheets - addition and subtraction from 1- 20
2) Math Puzzlers - Depending on your child, they may want to do these alone or with you.
3) KenKen Puzzles - We started these with Daniel this week with some help from Carter’s grandfather and the kids couldn’t stop doing them. :)
Your child also has a folder of addition math fact cards to 20. These they each separated into two categories - automatic and needs practice. The ones that need practice should each have a strategy (clue) on the front. For example if 7 + 5 needs practice, I could think about it as 5 + 5 + 2 or I could pull 3 over from the 5 and have it be 10 + 2.
In the world of math education, there is an increasing awareness of the difference between memorization and automaticity. Memorization is seen as rote recall of facts. Whereas automaticity is developed through thinking and understanding relationships. In the end memorization and automaticity may look alike - but automaticity is really like an iceberg. There is much more understanding below the surface of the answer. And this understanding of relationships will become increasingly important for your child as they progress through the years, influencing their understanding of things such as factoring polynomials.
When practicing these facts, have your child think about how that fact is related to others or the number 10. There can be many different strategies for each fact and they may decide that a strategy other than the one they first wrote down works better for them. That’s okay - again it’s the thinking to get to the automaticity that is important!
