| Dear San Francisco School Community:
The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Morris as the next Head of The San Francisco School, effective July 1, 2008.
The Board's unanimous decision followed the enthusiastic recommendation of the Search Committee which cited the close alignment between The San Francisco School's mission, values, and strategic goals and Steve Morris' personal strengths, skills, vision, and experience.
Much beloved in his community by students, educators, administrators, and families, Steve brings both roots and wings to the position of Head of School. As one staff member stated: "It is hard to imagine a candidate more suitable to The San Francisco School at this time - seasoned and groomed enough to know who we are, yet fresh, energetic and open-minded enough to chart his own course while staying true to the values of SFS."
In his letter to the Search Committee, Steve alluded to his personal story that illustrates how, thanks to the educational and community resources he received as a student in an independent school, he was able to transcend challenges and go on to become the first member of his family to obtain a college and a graduate degree. Steve understands that today's children face their own challenges in a world that is increasingly competitive and too often fractured by lack of understanding and mutual support. He feels it is imperative that students graduate with a combination of both academic skills and strong character traits in order to succeed in the world and to contribute to it.
Mike Diamonti, Head of University High School, highlights Steve's: "strength in motivating and bringing together a group of strong personalities and opinions to achieve a common objective." Diamonti adds, "children are his passion, equity is his passion."
Of The San Francisco School, Steve says: "SFS is a proven leader in music and arts education. We are also known to take great pride in educating our students on social justice and equity issues. These facts should always remain. SFS now must develop an equally strong reputation for its academics. All of this can be achieved while maintaining a compelling, engaging learning environment."
That Steve has worked closely with and been mentored by Terry Edeli over the past three years adds to his depth of experience as Assistant Head of The San Francisco School, as an English Teacher, Advisor, and Coach at both University High School and Sewickly Academy, as Dean of Multicultural Programs at University High School, as Program Officer of Summerbridge National, and Executive Director of Summerbridge Pittsburgh. Steve's dedication to his family, especially his wife Beth Goya and their two sons, Rowan and Mason, speaks profoundly to our emphasis on family at SFS.
Our appointment of Steve Morris concludes an exhaustive national search assisted by independent school consultant Roger Bass of Resource Group 175. The thirteen-member S arch Committee, comprised of current and former trustees, parents, alumnae parents, and faculty, was assisted by student, parent, and faculty advisory committees. The San Francisco School e community's spirited participation energized and informed the entire process. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we thank all those who worked so diligently to help us successfully complete that most important responsibility of the Board - the selection of our new Head of School. Please join us in welcoming Steve Morris as incoming Head of The San Francisco School.
Sincerely,
Matt Plut

| Taiwanese Educators Visit SFS |
The San Francisco School had the honor of hosting an educational delegation from the Renoir Creative School (www.renoir.com.tw) in Taiwan on Monday, February 5th. The twenty teachers and administrators are here in the Bay Area to research elementary education, as their school will be expanding from its current preschool into a full preschool through elementary. After a brief welcome and overview, the delegation spent most of the morning touring the school and visiting classrooms. Our second graders, who are currently studying China and many of whom are studying Mandarin in our extended care program, welcomed the visitors with a few words of Chinese, and with classrooms filled with evidence of their China study. The visitors also enjoyed interviewing two of our eighth graders who had just heard today that they had been accepted to School of the Arts. In answer to a question about what they appreciated the most about their visit to The San Francisco School, the visitors enthusiastically responded with the first grade music class with Sofia, and The San Francisco School’s overall emphasis on big overarching ideas and the emphasis on teaching thinking skills.

Great News from the SF Dept of the Environment
For 6 weeks, the SF Dept of the Environment sent a trash monitor, Mark, to The School on collection days in the hopes of finding a recycling rate of at least 50%. Using his findings and data from Sunset Scavenger, it was determined that SFS recycles and composts 93%, by weight, of our trash, way beyond the expectations!!! Mark has been monitoring schools around the city in order to distribute money from a special grant to maintenance workers who do so much of the recycling. Lu and Andy, The San Francisco School's very own maintenance team, will be honored as one of these grant recipients in recognition of their hard work and dedication. This is recognition for all of us and our great work towards Zero Waste! |

Opening of 5th Grade "Day of the Dead" exhibit at SOMAR Gallery
This professional show features the Bay Area?s most illustrious Day of the Dead artists and includes an important piece produced by our 5th grade Spanish class that honors the children and parents missing since Hurricane Katrina. This year?s exhibition, Rituals in the Journey of Life and Death, is dedicated to these victims. SFS students have produced an altar representing a kitchen replete with family recipes, accompanying scenes and stories, and a refrigerator filled with empty milk cartons of missing kids from Hurricane Katrina. The installation reflects the depth of our school's commitment to the element of action in Humanitarian Promise. Click here to see our very own SFS students interviewed in a KRON news report |

SFS goes Solar!
With initial funds raised by our very own SFS students coupled with a generous grant from the Ayrshire Foundation, 65% of the electricity needs for the main building is now powered by solar energy. What this means for The San Francisco School and the overall environment is: 24 kilowatts of emissions-free power, savings of over $70,000 in electricity fees per year for 30 years, and an offset of over 50,000 lbs per year of greenhouse gas emissions. The San Francisco School continues its? commitment to environmental sustainability. |

Chinese Educators Visit SFS
Our school recently hosted 23 school Superintendents and Principals from the Fushan City, Guangdong Province in China for a half day. The goal for our visitors was to learn more about Independent School education in the US. SFS was a part of a larger tour for these visitors, which had them visiting publiic schools as well. While at SFS, the visitors saw classes from the preschool through eight grades. They also had an exciting musical performance by the second graders.
The last hour of their visit was a fantastic discussion between the visitors and teachers from SFS regarding education. Many ideas were shared regarding pedagogical and educational philosophies in both countries. In the end, it was a wonderful conversation, and both groups benefited from the exchange.
We feel honored. |

Who's on First?
Terry’s Annual Check-in on Teacher Plans for the Next School Year
Well, Pamela of course. Pamela Myers is back in first grade next year, which will be her 40th year of teaching at The San Francisco School! Well, there was that maternity leave for her now 31 year-old son, and the sabbatical during which Pamela wrote the now famous Elf Books, a first grade tradition: But it really was 1969 when Pamela arrived at The San Francisco School to begin teaching first (and second) grade. There are more than a few SFS parents who were not even born then!
But it is not only Pamela who is returning to teach in the fall of 2008 at SFS! Steve Morris and I have been conducting our annual “contract” talks with faculty and staff regarding their plans for next year, and the results are in… and they are noteworthy. Every preschool teacher and specialist, every elementary classroom teacher and specialist, and every middle school teacher and specialist is planning to return next year! (Up in the air are the plans of the elementary teaching interns, the elementary extended care teachers, and the very part-time staff, all of whom do not need to commit to next year until the end of March.)
I am pleased to announce, too, that the entire administration and staff team plan to return as well! So, as of today, I guess I am the only SFS staff member who is not planning to return next year. Makes me wonder a bit what role I have been playing all these years! The transition to next year is still a big deal, however, as we have entered the final interview stage for hiring the Lower School Head and Middle School Head. We have conducted a national search for these two positions, have been meeting excellent candidates, and our goal is to have both positions hired by spring break.
With the changes in administration in mind, the noteworthy consistency in faculty will certainly contribute to a significantly smoother year of leadership transition. It is worth noting here, though, that the solid teacher transition program that Steve Morris has developed over the last few years is nonetheless in place, just in case there is an unexpected change in someone’s plans. If and when teachers do leave SFS, there is a clearly outlined protocol for how the outgoing teacher documents in writing and artifacts their entire program for the incoming staff member; there is a clear expectation of paid time for both the outgoing and incoming teachers to meet and transfer curriculum verbally and in person; there is paid workshop time in the summer for new teachers to think and plan; there is a comprehensive summer orientation program for new staff that transmits school values, culture and pedagogy; and there is in place a year-long mentoring and training program for every new teacher. But it just looks like this particular year we might not need to initiate all these structures that we have developed over the years to assure the seamless transition of new faculty into the school. And it is great that Pamela is still on first, too.
