Care, Community & Climate Justice

September 2019 has been marked by two things at The San Francisco School: care and community. We have been caring for one another as classmates, colleagues, and friends; we have also been looking beyond the gates of SFS to be better stewards of our city, our Bay, and our planet.

All of us in the SFS community are proud of our young people for taking a stand for climate change in solidarity with children and youth worldwide during September. This month, our littlest ones led through service by making signs for a climate justice mini-march on Gaven Street and walking to the nearby pocket park to pick up litter - while some of our oldest students joined with thousands of other students, parents, and educators around the City for the Strike for Climate Change.

Our wider SFS community of families, faculty, and friends turned out in force on Saturday, September 21, for the City’s annual Coastal Clean Up Day. As one parent leader noted, the SFS crew “joined a San Francisco clean up team with other local volunteers. Donning gloves and safety vests, we picked up dozens of bags of trash. It was hard work, and it felt good to help our beautiful Bay!”

Lower School Head Maggie Weis was thrilled to see our elementary students “(show) solidarity with the Youth Climate Strike. Teachers CJ Logel, Petrina Grube, and Paige Sandoz led the 2nd and 4th grade classes in a complete clean up of the Gaven St. Pocket Park at Bowdoin! At Saturday’s Coastal Clean Up, we cleaned City streets of major garbage piles so that they would not blow into the Bay.

Thanks to all the students and families who led the way; care and community win the day!
