Equity and Belonging at SFS

SFS Statement on Diversity, Inclusion, Social Justice, and Belonging

The San Francisco School lives our mission and values by modeling and promoting equity, social justice, interculturalism, environmental sustainability, and peace in our work. SFS actively supports all individuals to be their complete, authentic selves, and welcomes and celebrates community members of any race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, citizenship status, faith, and socioeconomic status. We aim for every person to thrive in an inclusive and culturally-rich context, fueled by diversity of thought, perspective, and experience, that enhances learning and supports the ability of individuals to fulfill their humanitarian promise.

SFS’s commitment to being an equitable and inclusive community is intentionally woven into every facet of the School experience. From academics to athletics, heritage celebrations, assemblies, school governance, committee work, professional and curriculum development, and family engagement, we strive to ensure that every member of our community feels seen, represented, and valued.

We Believe

  • A whole child education has the power to transform lives and communities.
  • Every student deserves to be seen, heard, and valued for who they are in their intersectional identities.
  • Every student should see their identity reflected in the curriculum, the community, and the culture of the school.
  • The power of restorative conversations builds authentic relationships.
  • Our efforts to include all community members unlock success and the ability to respond to difficult challenges.
  • The courage to stand up for social justice should be nurtured.

Our Commitments

Students

Students are supported through opportunities to explore identity, share experiences, and build friendships. With guidance from staff, they may gather to talk, plan events, or contribute to cultural celebrations. These moments of connection nurture leadership, self-expression, and community, helping every student feel seen, valued, and celebrated.

2024-2025 Enrollment

Staff

Staff are supported with opportunities for connection, reflection, and professional development. These supports foster personal belonging within the community while also equipping staff to better guide and care for students. Strengthened relationships and expanded skills help create a more inclusive and supportive school environment for everyone.

Students and Faculty

Parents

Parenting adults are supported with opportunities to connect, share experiences, and build community. Some opportunities focus on social connection, others highlight cultural traditions, and many create space for encouragement and belonging. These connections help affirm student identities and strengthen the sense of joy and inclusion across the school.
