Fifth graders spent the week of September 14 at The Mosaic Project in Santa Cruz, learning alongside students from E.R. Taylor and Daniel Webster through experiences centered on diversity, connection, empathy, and conflict resolution.
Students reflected on the differences that make each person unique, explored stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination, and practiced ways to respond to conflict with assertiveness: being strong without being mean, and kind without being weak.
They also built new friendships across schools, stretched outside their comfort zones, explored their connection to the natural world among the redwoods, and worked together through activities designed to deepen their understanding of equity and community. Throughout the week, Mosaic staff praised our students for their enthusiasm, engagement, willingness to take risks, and care for one another.
The experience gave students both new perspectives and practical tools for creating peace at SFS and beyond.
