The International Orff Schulwerk Forum (IOSFS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the global promotion and continued development of the pedagogical-artistic work of Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, known as Orff-Schulwerk. The Forum connects a worldwide network of national Orff-Schulwerk associations, affiliated schools and institutions, and individual members. Its mission includes documenting international practices, facilitating communication, advising on pedagogical matters, and organizing or supporting related events. The San Francisco School (SFS) serves as a model program—currently the only school that is a member of the Forum. The San Francisco School (SFS) is frequently invited to present and share our work.
The summer 2025 convention, held in Salzburg, Austria, brought together educators and researchers to explore the voice in its many forms—the singing voice, rhythmic voice, poetic voice, and individual voice—through the lens of the Orff-Schulwerk approach. Sessions included keynote presentations, practical workshops, and examples from associated schools. The event emphasized creativity, student agency, and inclusive pedagogical practices that ensure every voice is heard and valued.
The SFS's Music Department Sofía López-Ibor and James Harding developed (presented by Sofía at the conference) a lecture-demonstration showcasing the SFS LowerSchool Drama Program. The presentation highlighted how drama can be a powerful tool for student voice, interpretation, and ownership of classical material within the Orff-Schulwerk approach.
The conference was concluded with a final choral session led by Sofía Sofia along with Polo Vallejo, Ph.D. (Ethnomusicologist and Composer) as described by IOSFS as a "powerful celebration of global musical traditions. Participants were invited to sing and experience repertoire from Spain, Argentina, Ghana, Senegal, Estonia, and Italy, reflecting the rich, multicultural spirit of the convention. The session highlighted the transformative role of music in fostering connection, creativity, and shared expression across cultures."
