Where We Learn

Our relationship with the Portola goes back to our beginning.

In our more than 55 years in the Portola, we have been shaped by and invested in our local community.

In 1966,  The San Francisco School was founded in a church basement on Woolsey St. just a few blocks away from our current location. Originally called The San Francisco Montessori School, the School expanded rapidly, and in 1969, SFS purchased the 300 Gaven property where it has been ever since.

The 1.6 acre campus has changed over time with the gradual construction of the Herbst Building, the Edeli Building, the Steve Morris Community Center; the acquisition of 307 and 311 Gaven St. for administrative offices; and the creation of the Adventure Playground, a unique outdoor space that includes the Field Station, gazebo, barn, 50 ft slide, and expansive garden. Recent renovations have updated the Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms and the Music Room, and the Forge Our Future: the Campaign for SFS funded enhancement of the School’s STEAM program which included the creation of the Learning Commons.

SFS is an urban school with a village atmosphere.”
